Today at a crowded launch event attended by Shepway Chairman Susan Carey, Leader Cllr Robert Bliss, the Mayor of Folkestone, John Barber TCM, Chris Kirkham DiscoverFolkestone as well as many County and District Councillors saw the launch of new local radio station named Academy FM.
AcademyFM - Folkestone's newest radio station based at Folkestone Academy. It can be found at 105.9FM. Run by station Manager Dave Sharpe and operated by many of the pupils.
Whilst much of the funding was from other sources the kick start funding was from grants from Cllr Roland Tolputt and Cllr Dick Pascoe who both put in £3000.00. Dick has also already done three interviews for the station on local democracy showing how the Town Council, Shepway and KCC work together (or not as the case may be).
Today Folkestone Academy Station manager Dave Sharp briefly told how one of the main objectives was to give young people, some of whom are not necessarily high achievers, a chance to develop new skills and increase their self confidence with the support of training to help them achieve this.
105.9 Academy FM, Folkestone’s community radio station will play a variety of good music, from chart hits and classic tunes in the daytime, to contemporary specialist music in the evenings. Programmes will also include a chance to discuss local issues, promote local events and will also broadcast music made right here in Kent, every hour, every day.
