District Councillors Jan Holben and David Owen were among those who turned out for the Folkestone Choral Society on 14 April at the Leas Cliff Hall. It is a long established tradition that the Folkestone Choral Society give a concert on Good Friday but this was a special concert as it was the final concert for Berkeley Hill who has been Musical Director of the Society since 1976.
For his farewell concert Berkeley chose a programme entirely by Brahms including A German Requiem which Berkeley had conducted four times previously with the Folkestone Choral Society. A German Requiem is piece Berkley says ‘requires stamina’ so it was balanced by an orchestral piece, Concerto for Violin and Cello with soloists Savitri Grier and Indira Grier, sisters at the start of their international careers and family connections in Sandgate. The Amberley Orchestra gave fine support to the soloists and the the singers.
The Folkestone Choral Society was given free use of the Leas Cliff Hall by Shepway District Council.
